Can Obama Help Gulf Shrimpers?

By November 11, 2008

Follow me on:

A Gulf Shrimp Boat unloads. The hurricanes that hammered the Gulf Coast several years ago are still being felt by Gulf shrimpers, who have been struggling to survive. There is a great piece on this here, and the author wonders aloud whether President-elect Obama may do better at helping them than President Bush has done.

Obama has pledged to help rebuild the Gulf Coast, including the estuaries and swamps that both protect the coast and serve as the nursery to the vast schools of shrimp that live in the Gulf. The new president, after all, has a selfish interest here: Obama is an avowed shrimp lover.

But the federal government can only do so much: You can do your bit by seeking out and buying American shrimp, especially the delicious Gulf white shrimp. They may be more expensive, but American shrimp are caught sustainably, and buying them helps our fisheries in the Gulf states survive.

And let's be real: Can you imagine making a Creole shrimp gumbo with foreign shrimp? I can't.
